A Native American man coming across a protest decided to speak his mind. His truth, is something that none of these protestors want to acknowledge because it would force them to concede that they are all “illegal” and responsible for the genocide of Native people, the loss of language as well as the ongoing effect of colonialism on Indigenous citizens. It’s a truth that needs to be told but I doubt if anyone at that protest heard a word he had to say.
Native American Man: You shut up. You’re all illegal. You’re all fucking illegal. You’re all illegal. We didn’t invite none of you here. We’re the only Native Americans here. That’s right. We are the only Native American here. You’re all illegal. We didn’t invite none of you. We didn’t invite none of you. Go home. Go home. Get on with your bogus arguments. Get on with your bogus arguments. We’re the only legal one’s here.
Someone in the crowd: We have Native Americans here.
Native American Man: We should have put that sign up when you son of a bitches came. (referring to a protester hold a sign, which I am unable to read) It represents blood. That represents blood spilled by Native Americans, protecting this land from the invaders. Yeah, that’s right, that’s right, you don’t want to hear the God damned truth do you? Get home, get home bitch. You don’t want to hear the truth. That’s what that flag (American flag) stands for, all of the Native Americans you killed to plant your houses here. That’s the truth. That’s the truth. That’s the truth.
I would be remiss if I didn’t point his use of misogynistic language. The point he was making about immigration and who should be considered illegal – a word which in and of itself is problematic was more than valid, but he could have made this point without using a word which demeans women. When you are angry and passionate about an issue, it’s all to easy to fall back on the privilege you do possess in any given situation but these only undermines one’s argument and continues the cycle of oppression.
